#Zhu zhu pets game races update

The real point of this update is to introduce the Wild Bunch to the growing Zhu Zhu collection, as this group of forest critters is here to extend the retail lifespan of Cepia’s charming little rodents in much the same way the Care Bears non-bear friends did some two decades ago. Still, given the genre of ‘cute, cuddly virtual pet’, how nice would it have been to let kids take pictures and impose their favorite Zhu Zhus in them, and maybe even uploading them to their Wii or Facebook profiles?ĭespite the pretense of the beloved hamsters going on adventures, Zhuzhu Pets: Featuring the Wild Bunch for the DS is virtually a carbon-copy sequel to the original game that was released earlier this year. Select bonus levels will let users take a quick snapshot using the DSi’s camera and insert that into the level as a background I wasn’t able to try this out for myself, but it’s nice to see developers take advantage of this underused feature. The DS version also boats a ‘special’ bonus feature for players using the DSi hardware, but you probably won’t hear much about it because, frankly, it’s not that special. What’s worse is that the sound quality is severely compressed, making the already-shrill vocals even more so, and because pretty much everything is narrated, chances are good that you’ll be hearing quite a bit before wanting to claw your ears out. It’s so condescendingly shrill and artificially ‘positive’ that it just comes off as creepy almost like a Valley Girl on helium sealed in an airtight vacuum.

Likewise, the various sound effects and pellet-munches each give off is spot-on and almost deliriously cute, although one aspect of the game’s audio design merits special attention, as it may be a real deal-breaker for parents not looking to drive their kids nuttier than a tasty hamster treat.Īs with the original game, The Wild Bunch features full narration from what can only be described as the most annoying, most piercingly bad voice-acting that I’ve ever had the displeasure of hearing. I won’t lie, as seeing them give their own little stuffed animals a squeeze before napping was adorably cute, and there isn’t much to complain with how the game looks and feels.

The graphics retail the same pleasant, easy-to-see visuals from the original, which makes pointing at and interacting with your various hamster friends fairly easy. It’s nice of them to add variety, but they don’t really feel that different. Further levels add racing mini-games in plastic hamster balls and cars, but even these are just variations on the regular levels and play exactly the same. Unfortunately, this can only be activated by tapping on the power meter bar itself or by pressing on the lettered-buttons on the DS, which is a little clumsy and unintuitive.

While this may not sound very challenging, its target audience will probably find collecting each level’s total goodiesĪ special ‘power meter’ fills as your hamster finds editable pick-ups (carrots, cheese bits) that can be used for an extra burst of speed to crash through obstacles and find hidden items. You’ll use the stylus to guide the little critters by dragging it where you want them to go, just the original game (as well as the Zelda DS titles), while an endless supply of bumpers and tubes can make for some very fast Sonic the Hedgehog-like gameplay. Outside of the various homes and training sections, the real ‘action’ of the game take place in overhead views that have you guiding various Zhu Zhu hamsters through various maze-levels to collect yummy treats like carrots, cheese, and other goodies while picking up coins and searching for the key to unlock the next level. They may look tough and play hard, but it’s all in good fun as this new group of squirrels, bunnies, and the like join your growing clan of adorable rodents travel across the world map, flying (!) from house to house, meeting equally-adorable new friends, partake in challenges, and convince fans to rush out and buy each every single toy they can find. Unlike the original game, however, there’s a new story that has the original hamsters competing against the wily group of new forest critters called The Wild Bunch.
